Reusable Gift Bags

Nobody enjoys a beautifully wrapped gift more than I do!  At times, my family become very irritated with me  inflicting that on their lives. When Christmas comes, I want packages to look like we gave some thought and care into not only selecting the gifts but in the presentation as well.  One of my dearest friends told me about a store in a little town she had often been in. They took great care in the wrapping of any gifts and had a signature look. If you received a gift from there, it seemed marvelous before you ever opened it, because of the lovely presentation. That is the way I like to think of gifting! It’s enjoyed before it is ever opened.

Yet, here’s the rub. Holiday after holiday there is an enormous amount of paper that goes to the trash. It seems like such a waste. I have often thought about using something which would be reusable; not for saving money, but to limit my part in contributing to landfills.

When one of my daughters mentioned something along these lines, I jumped at the chance to finally get going on  the idea of reusable wrapping. Several days after Christmas she called and told me she had found a store getting rid of Christmas fabric for 99 cents a yard. She went home with 30 yards of fabric, and no idea what to do.  We decided we would make some kind of bags, but had no clue as to what sizes we wanted to make. I searched online to see if I could find any ideas for good sizes, but only found small bags. Sizes and styles were still undetermined.

A kitchen towel made a great sized bag

A kitchen towel made a great sized bag!

We had decided to have our family holiday late, and it gave me the opportunity to try something out! I had purchased some colored holiday dish towels for some projects that never got done. I decided to fold one in half and it looked like a descent size! I stitched a hem along the top edge to run ribbon through, stitched the sides, ran the ribbon and I was done. This actually turned out to be the perfect size for several gifts I had. Several bags later, I was done with my “wrapping.”  I admit there was a learning curve, and sewing over the existing hems on the towels was a challenge. By the time I had enough to use, I had come up with several tricks.

Instead of a bunch of individually wrapped gifts, there were usually several little gifts inside one bag. We wondered if the lack of individual gifts would detract from the overall feel of gift opening. It did not!  Cleanup was a breeze, and we are ready to make more sizes, colors and styles!  The bonus — for those who lack the best fine motor skills, it allows them to easily wrap their gifts!

Photos and Plates Make Upcycled Home Decor

Upcycling items doesn’t have to be time consuming or difficult! Here is a decorative plate used to create a bit of wall decor with a copy of one of my favorite photos of my grandmother.

Upcycled plate with photo for home decor

Decorative plate with cutwork edge is recycled into home decor with family heritage photo.

When I was washing this plate, I realized it was actually meant hold a pillar candle. Guess how I figured it out. There was a label on the back that said so! So much for my detective skills.

This decorative with cut work edges was chosen for this project.

That floral paper is a piece of scrapbook paper from the CTMH La Vie En Rose ensemble! I love it. Here is a peek at the paper pack.

After measuring the center of the plate, I knew how large to cut the scrapbook paper to use for the center of the plate, and also decided how large I would print the photo of my grandmother. I printed the photo on inkjet Presentation Paper to get a nice photo to use. If you have a photo on photo paper, that you don’t mind cutting, you can certainly use a regular photo.

A circle of decorative scrapbook paper cut for the center, and the heritage photo printed and cut in a circle.

After cutting these out, I used Liquitex Matte Medium to adhere them to the plate. Apply a thin layer on the plate and then lay the paper down and smooth down. Apply a thin layer over the top of the paper and smooth it down. Lay on the photo while still wet. If it is already too dry, just add a bit more of your medium. Then layer another thin layer over the top, and be sure to smooth out any air pockets.

Be sure to wipe any excess off the edge of the plate before it dries. Baby wipes are always great to have on hand in your crafting area!

Select a ribbon or other piece of fiber to use hang your plate. I decided to make the loop long, and create the bow at the top of my plate. You could certainly just run the ribbon through the holes and create your bow at the top of the loop if you want to.

Finally, I added some crystal pieces that had come from an old lamp. They are rather large, and that is part of the reason I selected a bold pattern for the scrapbook paper, as well as made my hanging loop so long. Each one helped balance out the other parts of this project.

Photos can live in other places besides frames and scrapbooks. I hope you’ll give something like this a try!

Quick Little Bags for Recognition or Thank You’s

No matter what time of year it is, there seems to be numerous occasions to let people know they are doing a great job, or to just offer them a little thank you!

Quick little favor bag with CTMH slate bags

Make a few bags to have on hand to quickly fill and give!

I am a firm believer in lifting people up. People enjoy being noticed for an achievement or for something they have done for someone.Since school has started, and kids seem to need a lot of positive reinforcement, what better way to offer it than quick little reminders you can tuck in somewhere they will find!

This weekend, I took just a few minutes to use a new stamp set to create some quick pieces which I could add to gift or treat bags and stick in a little goodie of some sort. These are not just for kids, and if you know someone well enough, tuck in some little surprise you are sure they will use.

See why I think this is a great stamp set to use for this type of little recognition.

The images outlined in red have a corresponding shape to cut with a Cricut electronic cutting machine, using the Close to My Heart newest Artistry cartridge. I love the speech bubble shapes! Those are so fun to use on scrapbook pages!

You can use whatever size bag you want, but I thought these little bags would be great to have on hand! Aren’t they adorable! Besides the Slate color, they also are available in Honey, Lagoon, and Ruby.

Make quick work of these by using embellishments. You may already have them from scrapbooking, card making, or other crafting endevours! Here is how I made them.

  • Select a stamp
  • Cut a piece of cardstock to fit the stamp size, and stamp it
  • Add Shimmer Trim! It is glitzy and self adhesive
  • Add self adhesive sequins
  • Fold top and punched two small holes
  • Thread fiber through holes and tied to close the bag
  • That’s it!

What are you going to tuck inside your little bags?

If you like any of these products, here’s a quick shopping list and links:

Wrapping Odd Shaped Gifts

make it monday blog hop logoWelcome to Make it Monday! You may be starting here today, or you may have come from Alice’s Scrapbook Wonderland, where she shows how Christmas is all about family connections on a holiday layout she shares.

At some point you are going to have an odd shaped gift and need a way to wrap it. There are a variety of ideas, but I came across this one and thought it was just brilliant! Plus, it’s not hard to do.

If you are so inclined, you could even take plain wrapping paper and just write lines of words for the appropriate occasion, or just make lines of designs with markers or paint pens. Whatever you decide, you are going to be happy to have this technique in your bag of gift wrapping techniques! Enjoy!

If you need some quick gift tags to print, you can always do a quick search on Google or Pinterest for “printable gift tags” and come up with all kinds of tags to suit your needs.

The next stop on this week’s Make It Monday blog circle is Karen at Photos Kept Alive. She is showing how she finds images in the digital software program she uses, Historian.

Just a quick shout out to the others in our circle this week, in with some tips that may make your holidays more memorable. Gina is making memories with homemade bread this week. Do you have a family recipe that is a must have at the holiday meal? Do you have a recipe that must be passed down from generation to generation? Gina shares her favorite.

Easy Hand Decorated Gift Bags

make it monday blog hop logoWelcome back to the Make It Monday blog circle. You may be starting here, or you may have come from Jen Wright Designs and seen her fabulous Christmas template and freebie she shared today. Continue through this post and find out who is next in the circle.

Gift wrapping. I would venture to say that you either love it or hate it. Personally, I love creating a beautifully wrapped gift! A friend once told me that when she first got married, they lived in the small hometown of her husband. There was a store in town that wrapped gifts in the most beautiful way, and when you received one of these gifts, you felt special before you ever even opened the gift. We use to laugh that it could have been rocks and you would have loved them, because they had been presented in such a fabulous fashion!

You may be among the many people who have moved to just putting your presents in a gift bag, and just calling it complete! No doubt, gift bags have really taken the stress out of wrapping presents these days. They are quick and easy, and you can add a variety of ribbons or fibers to create an even more festive look, if you want to. However, a gift bag and some tissue is all it takes to get the job done.

Wouldn’t it be great to have some gift bags on hand, that would fit any occasion? How about keeping some plain bags on-hand, and then decorating them as needed — hand decorating them. Don’t roll your eyes at me! Hear me out.

Items to consider:

  • You don’t have to be an “artist” to accomplish this!
  • Hand designed items are often more expensive than other items, and you can create your own!
  • You could decorate bags as needed, making them unique to the occasion.
  • You can use simple shapes and line art.
  • Few supplies are needed.

Grab a plain gift bag and a paint marker! The Gold Pen-touch markers are fabulous!

I never really thought about doing this until I had taken Joanne Sharpe’s free 5 Golden Letterings online class, which I told you about recently. Even then, I didn’t have a plan. Then the day came…. Christmas. It was one of those days where plans changed faster than you could figure out what was going on. Suddenly, we had someone who still hadn’t wrapped her gifts needing to make about a two hour round trip to bring a family member to our celebration. Her husband went home and got the gifts, and brought them to our house to get help with wrapping. Larger items were wrapped with paper from rolls, and then….. I suddenly remembered the idea of hand decorating gift bags! Okay, I may have thought about it before, because I had a pack of kraft colored medium gift bags. I pulled them out, grabbed a gold and a white paint pen, and got busy. The extent of this endeavor was writing “Happy Holidays,” or a quick bunch of holly leaves with some berries, a Christmas tree shape, a couple of bells with a bow at the top, etc. My images looked like they came from a coloring book, just simple line art. I believe some of the bags were decorated with random shapes and patterns, fast and easy.

How did they turn out? Let’s just say, some people are easily impressed. I noticed that those bags made a return visit last Christmas.

Simple and effective!

Think how some red glitter glue could jazz up these berries!

Look how this crazy simple tree even looks “elegant” in gold on this black bag!

Obviously, you may not always have the correct sized gift bag on hand, but to have some that would fit many small things could be a life saver. “Happy Birthday,” or some balloons would be sufficient for a birthday bag; or even zig-zags or spiral patterns. I hope you’ll give this a try! You’ll also love the money you’ll save! I just bought a pack of 13 medium gift bags from my craft store, and used a 50% off coupon, which made the bags cost about 27 cent each.
