Mini-album Fairie Dust

Mini albums can be so satisfying to complete. They can be finished rather quickly and don’t take that many supplies. Find a few coordinating papers, a few embellishments, and you are well on your way to completion!  They even make perfect gifts.

Should you decide to make your album own from scratch, you can decide on any size you like. If you are purchasing an album, there are a variety of sizes available, depending on the vendor. Some prefer to offer albums with square pages, and others offer rectangular. I really like the curved spine albums with metal rings which I found available at Pinecone Press, who was a vender at Scrapbook Expo. They are chipboard, which allows you to paper or paint them. I used Perfect Paints to create a coordinating spine, inside and out. Pinecone Press had a number of kits available for cards and albums, and although I love creating things from scratch, I also enjoy a good kit if the paper catches my eye! I will also tell you that their album kits had great directions, which is a plus! This particular album has 6″ x 8″ pages.

Do you find there are certain paper lines you are drawn to more than others?  Graphic 45 is one of the lines that always has something I adore! This older Graphic 45 Fairie Dust collection really caught my eye. I adore whimsical things and I have enjoyed the number of fairie and mermaid items available!

Adding tip-ins will give you added areas for adding more to the album such as journaling, photos, etc. A sheet of paper designed with cut-aparts create great tip-ins. You can either cut your piece a little larger on one side, and adhere one edge under another piece to hide the edge, or you might use washi tape to make a little hinge.  Either method works well.

A closure of cords or ribbons is a great finishing touch. Selecting some charms to tie on them can be another way to personalize your creation — even if it started out from a kit!  I love the way that this sheer ribbon ruffled by carefully applying light heat to it. That will definitely be a trick I keep in mind for future projects.

Here are some photos of the inside pages.

Have you created any mini albums lately? Were they created for someone or something specific?

LayOut A Day, February 2020

February is LOAD220 month at scraphappy.org, (LayOut A Day, 2020). For me, it is always a push to get some pages done, whether I complete one each day of the month, or only complete a few. Even one is always better than nothing! It would be one story told.

Alice Boll has been the force behind ScrapHappy for a number of years now. Each year there is a LOAD event in February and May open to those who wish to participate; and a members only LOAD in October. There is a central theme for the month, and then prompts for each day, including a story prompt as well as a technique prompt. Sometimes people use the story prompt, the technique, or both!  These random prompts have enabled me to tell stories I would probably never have thought of. Of course, you aren’t required to follow the prompt, and many people just use the opportunity to complete a specific project of their own. We often see pages from vacations, weddings, graduations and more.  Alice also invites ScrapHappy members to be featured designers for the different prompts. Today I have a page featured for the prompt. I will share my page with you here.

My page today is a digital page from a recent cruise my husband and I took.

Today’s prompt reminded me of what I always think when I see the sun’s rays radiating out. To me, it is as if the sky is opening and creating a magical and dramatic effect to be enjoyed! I can’t really see sunrise or sunset from my house, and so anytime I get to see these, I think it is spectacular!

This page was done using the February ScrapHappy sketch. This is a digital page, and was done quickly using two photos from our trip last year. Although the sample page for the sketch looks like you could fussy cut to layer over the photo and create more interest, I simply used a second photo as a background for the basic oval shape. The background paper is sand, and creates interest with the colorful sun rays.

The page is simple, but sometimes simple is effective. Plus another moment and story has been documented.

How to Create a Scrapbook Layout without a Photo

I was reminded of a story I had not thought about in a very long time, by a prompt from this month’s LOAD (Layout a Day) challenge from the online Scrap Happy group. That is not an uncommon thing to happen, but for this story I really didn’t have anything that I felt would work. In the time before digital photography and cell phone cameras, there are many stories that we may remember, but don’t have even a single photo. So what do you do? Let me look into my crystal ball and tell you.

Crystal ball potential!

Crystal ball potential!

You might use a search and find an image you could use, by just using a screen shot, and cropping it as needed. Yes, there may or may not be legal implications, but all I am doing is putting it on a scrapbook page. Now, I draw the line at finding a scrapbook kit and doing a screen shot, or any other digital art meant to be used as such. Digital designers depend on our business, and in my opinion that is just stealing out of their pockets. On the other hand, I feel differently about using an image that nobody is trying to sell. This story was about my dad making a “crystal” ball from a light fixture. I thought I would use a photo of that type of light and doctor it up. I did find the exact type of light I was looking for on one of the big home improvement store’s site.  I decided to google to find a small digital kit I could download, and found several. I chose to purchase one from Amy Joy Studios, an Etsy seller, which gives me full rights to print and use, or just use on my digi scrapbook page. The main image on this page was from the kit.

The story of a humble light fixture becoming a crystal ball.

In the end, I only used the one image for my page. The real treasure to me is the memory and preserving the story. Adding some fun elements to page is a plus. Even if all I did was write the story down, it is a memory saved. Don’t let a non existent photo keep you from telling a story.

Baby’s First Year Mini Album

Here is a quick peek at the mini-album I made for my great-grandson’s first year.
It was from a project kit by Pine Cone Press Design, which I picked up at one of the scrapbook shows last year. If you like the binder, you can order it from them. It is called a “curved back spine album.” (I am not affiliated with them, I just like the way this cover turned out! Please note that their website is mis-stated in the video, as that was from printed information from them. I double checked and found an updated website, which is the link above.)  The video is below.

I have been working in my FOREVER account and adding my digital photos there, and love the way I can find what I need. I have even been creating some fast photo books and printing them with FOREVER Print. However, I still love creating paper projects! So I hope you enjoy this quick look at this little album.

Also, you can find out more about the Perfect Paints I mention at this link. (Again, not affiliated.)
