LayOut A Day, February 2020

February is LOAD220 month at scraphappy.org, (LayOut A Day, 2020). For me, it is always a push to get some pages done, whether I complete one each day of the month, or only complete a few. Even one is always better than nothing! It would be one story told.

Alice Boll has been the force behind ScrapHappy for a number of years now. Each year there is a LOAD event in February and May open to those who wish to participate; and a members only LOAD in October. There is a central theme for the month, and then prompts for each day, including a story prompt as well as a technique prompt. Sometimes people use the story prompt, the technique, or both!  These random prompts have enabled me to tell stories I would probably never have thought of. Of course, you aren’t required to follow the prompt, and many people just use the opportunity to complete a specific project of their own. We often see pages from vacations, weddings, graduations and more.  Alice also invites ScrapHappy members to be featured designers for the different prompts. Today I have a page featured for the prompt. I will share my page with you here.

My page today is a digital page from a recent cruise my husband and I took.

Today’s prompt reminded me of what I always think when I see the sun’s rays radiating out. To me, it is as if the sky is opening and creating a magical and dramatic effect to be enjoyed! I can’t really see sunrise or sunset from my house, and so anytime I get to see these, I think it is spectacular!

This page was done using the February ScrapHappy sketch. This is a digital page, and was done quickly using two photos from our trip last year. Although the sample page for the sketch looks like you could fussy cut to layer over the photo and create more interest, I simply used a second photo as a background for the basic oval shape. The background paper is sand, and creates interest with the colorful sun rays.

The page is simple, but sometimes simple is effective. Plus another moment and story has been documented.

Wednesday Wonder – Scrapbook Planning

Planning for Fun, planning scrapbook pagesToday is an excellent day to talk about scrapbooking, because I am heading out tomorrow afternoon to go with one of my daughters and some friends to a scrapbook retreat! This will not be quite the pampering event that Kathy and I are accustomed to with another group of friends, because at this location…. we all have to be responsible for a meal! YIKES. Can scrapbooking be fun if we have to cook, too? I’m sure we’ll manage. Thank goodness for things like lasagne that can be made ahead, to take and toss in the oven! Can you guess what I’m taking? wink, wink

My sweet Aussie friend, Melissa Shanhun, from Digital Scrapbooking HQ, has a great guest post about scrapbook planning and scheduling over at the The Daily Digi blog. Even though Melissa teaches digital scrapping, the info she shares in this post is appropriate for any method of scrapbooking.

I have to admit, there have been very few time I have planned a scrapbook.  I mostly create pages from photos that I love, or from prompts I receive at events like the Layout A Day challenge, which begins again, February 1. However, Melissa talks about pages she plans for through the year, and I think that without really thinking about it, many of us create our scrapbook pages like this. We DO have a plan for some pages, in the back of our mind.

It would be silly of me to tell you everything Melissa said in her post about scrapbook planning and scheduling, so run on over and check it out!

You can check out the LOAD215 Challenge here.

Scrapbook Page a Day – Prepping for LOAD215

Creating at least one scrapbook page each day of the month is not as difficult or crazy as it may sound at first. Especially if you are doing it with a group of people! LOAD 215 is just around the corner and that is exactly what we will be doing, creating a LayOut A Day. Each day we receive a prompt to interpret any way we choose, or we can just create a page of whatever we like. The goal is to get at least one scrapbook layout done each day.

LOAD215 Blog Hop

How in the world can you be prepared to create scrapbook pages for ideas yet to come? That’s a great question and here are some things I wish I had known before my first LOAD event.

  • Whether you are a paper scrapper or digital scrapper, I think one of the most important things is to take a look at what you have for photos and supplies. Even though I think I am a faster paper scrapper, I usually create digital pages during LOAD. I guess I like the flexibility it affords me, because of the number of kits I have available.
    • Browse through your kits and supplies for a brief review of what you already own! There is no need to spend more money if you already have a stash! You will find that by just reviewing your supplies, you’ll retain that info and be able to more quickly pull together a page.
    • Look at your photos. The same holds true about browsing your photos, and being able to think of a photo that may fit a prompt. When you’ve recently looked at your photos, you’ll think of something that will fit a prompt.
  • If you are paper scrapping, make sure you have plenty of adhesive and sharp blades for your paper trimmer!
  • Listen to the prompt as early as possible each day. That way, it may give you some extra time to process an idea before you actually sit down to create your page.
  • Join the Flickr group and share your pages! It is so much fun to see individual pages, and learn more about our online friends!
  • Don’t compare your work to other people’s. It’s not a contest. If all you did was put the photos on notebook paper and wrote something about the photo, or the story behind it, it would be a perfect page. In the end, it’s all about the photos and the words!
  • If you fall behind, don’t beat yourself up. Life happens! Just pick up and move forward. No matter how many pages you complete during LOAD, it will probably be more than if you had not participated. So be proud of yourself!

If I decide to do some paper scrapbooking during this LOAD, I am excited to already have some of my Close To My Heart Workshop On the Go kits on-hand. They not only include a paper pack, but even have layout instructions for two double layouts, along with embellishments and a special stamp set. How easy can it get?

If you are participating in LOAD 215, I wish you many completed pages!

Here are more helpful hints I’ve talked about before other previous LOAD events: LOAD212  LOAD 213

Scrapbooking a Story Without an Exact Photo

In the scheme of telling your own story on scrapbook pages, you may come across stories for which you have no exact photo. What do you do? Should you just forget telling the story? No, no, no! TELL the story anyway.

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but a paragraph can tell the story with or without the photo. Today, I wanted to tell about my first bedroom that was such a beautiful place for a little girl! I don’t know of a single picture that exists of that room. We moved from that home when I was seven years old, and my next bedrooms looked nothing like it. What to do, what to do.

The room was lavender and white, so I used that as the main color scheme for my page! The story was told, and a picture added from that timeframe of my childhood.

LOAD514-Day 2
The story includes how my mom was refinishing furniture before it was even trendy! She refinished an iron and brass bed, painting it white. The bed was repainted yellow for my own girls, and then used by my first granddaughter! I’m sure my mom didn’t have any idea how many little girls would use that bed frame!

The story of the bed frame will probably get another visit on future pages, because I know there are pictures of it in the girls’ rooms. Just because I told about the bed once, doesn’t mean I can’t tell it again. After all, it will somebody else’s story!

What ways have used to tell a story without an exact photo for the story?

Layout-A-Day, May 2014

It’s another month of the challenge from LayoutADay.com to create a scrapbook page each day this month! Whether I complete the challenge or not, I’ll have more pages done than I would normally have. Participating is always fun because we post photos of our pages in a group on Flickr.

During these challenges, I have created many pages about my own life. If I don’t tell my story, who will? The daily prompts of LOAD inspire stories that I would probably not have thought about on my own. All of the members different pages are so diverse and it is always fun to see the different stories created from the same prompt of the day.

Today, I went WAY back in my story — the year I was born! With the internet, it is fairly easy to come up with all kinds of facts for a page like this. dMarie.com has a great feature called “Time Capsule.” All you do is just pop in the date and it pull together all kinds of facts about headlines, songs, prices of day-to-day items and more.  Here’s a look at my page.
